Quinault Bear hunt Sept 3 – 4, 2012

My buddy mentions that he was thinking about doing a spring hunt in Quinault, with Quinault Coastal Black Bear Hunts It was less expensive than going elsewhere for a big coastal black bear. I told him if he needed someone to go with him I was in. March 1st, we picked the dates of Sept 3 -7 to hunt. Deposit was sent in and now the dreaming of a 300-500lb bear is in my head. With some emails sent back and forth and questions answered. Place to stay reversed and when we are leaving to head over there. In the meantime, I have had some health issues with my stomach. My buddy and I go get our rifles sighted in, him using a 30-06 AI and my choice was the .338 win mag (I needed to blood the rifle). My buddy choice of bullet was the 168gr TTSX and mine was the 225 TSX. Now the wait!!

Sunday Sept 2 has arrived and the plan was to leave at noon. Truck packed and we are on the way to Aberdeen to buy some food. Now to Pacific Beach here we come…Got checked in and truck is unloaded. Tomorrow we hunt!!  We decide to drive around and check this place out and we also found the place we would meet the guides. Now it was getting bed time and we have everything ready for the morning.

Morning is here and I don’t think I slept a wink (excited and stomach issues). I think I was up at 5am, check my email and found that the guide wanted us to call him last night. The wireless wasn’t that great in our room. So my buddy called him about 8:30am and the plan was to meet him at 11pm. We arrive there and he tells us to follow him to his place. Paid the rest of the money, now off to the range to make sure the guns are on. The guides had two other hunters on this trip and I believe they were from South Carolina. This was their second trip with the guide. I went with one guide and the others went with another guide. As we drive out to the bait station he tells me about the bears that are coming into the bait. He tells me about the 300lber that is coming in, but a couple of smaller ones are visiting. We get there and get my blind set up and now I’m here by myself….okay and the bears. Did I mention this was my first bear hunt? On the ground? With hungry bears? About 6:30pm my first bear I see cruising the through the woods and passed the bait station. He turns back to look at the bait and I see that his ears are huge and know that he is a smaller bear. 15 minutes later, either another bear or the same shows himself, but not long enough to get a shot or a good look at him. The guide comes and gets me about 8:15pm and we head back to the house. On the ride back to motel, my buddy tells me about him having a couple of 200lbers coming and playing in front of him. How hard it was to sit in a tree stand. Thank god he brought a couple of seat pads. Back at the motel, we eat a bit and got ready for the morning. I have to say here that it was a long day of sitting.

Tuesday morning comes early for me again. I shower, get some food, take my pills and get my stuff ready for a day of sitting in a blind. We meet back at the guide’s house and the plan is about the same as yesterday but this time we are able to go and help bait some of the stations. This was fun and I was able to see what was on the trail cam.  We visited a couple of sites and found that a nice bear was coming into the bait about 2:30pm.  It was 1:30pm.  I made the decision to sit on this bait station. The guide drives me over and helps set up the blind.  Now again, it was just me and bears. 2:30, 3:30 4:30 and 5:30 come and go….not one bear to the bait.  Somewhere in this time I receive a text message from my buddy saying that he has not seen a bear yet, my reply must have been about the same.  7ish, I get another text saying “bear down” and another that said ‘not huge but a good one’.  My text back said ‘still not bears’.  7:50ish my bear coes in, it was getting dark and I had to check to see if I could see him in my scope.  He came in, took some donuts and ran back in to the woods three or four times.  I was able to see that his back was at the top of the barre and the last time he came in I set my crosshairs on his shoulder and touched off the .338 win mag.  he goes down but still moving, so the words from the guide come to mind….drop him at the barrel and if he is still moving put another in him.  So I did.  Another bullet in him.  I might not have needed to do that, but oh well.  Phone call to the guide and now my bear is headed to the house.  It wasn’t the biggest bear but it was my first.  Apparently, both of the other hunters shot bears also.  One shot a sow and the other shot a big sow that got away ( she also had cubs).  We sat around and watched the skin our bears and then headed back to the motel, for some sleep.  Plan was to met up with the guide, pick  up our bears and head home.

Wednesday morning arrived and now the packing begins. Shower, truck packed and headed over to the office to check out. We are headed to the guides house to pick up our bears, a few more pictures and bear in game bags. We are ready for the trip home, but first stop is the butchers. Bear dropped off, meat list in and now we are headed to my place. We stop and fill up the truck with gas before we get to my place. At my place, we unloaded my stuff from his truck, work out the money exchange and now to get bear skin into freezer. My stuff put away and relaxing. Now I have two days to do nothing.stations. This was fun and I was able to see what was on the trail cameras. We visited a couple of sites and found that a nice bear was coming into the bait about 2:30pm. 1. Great post!! Paints a great picture of how the hunt went. The Outdoorsman was very helpful in answering some questions I had about this specific hunt! I will be looking for more of his posts.

  2. Doesn’t look like a picture I took so I’ll reply honestly,.. lol Thank you for your visit to Quinault Reservation. Sitting in a tree-stand/ground blind without a doubt very tedious, boring,..etc.. (Bring a book next time) and to me sounds like another successful hunt. As to wether or not it was your trophy, well they don’t always come in when we expect them too.. and like any other hunting sometimes its just luck of the draw as I’ve seen time and again. We do however have world class (wild) black bear here in their own right., and seriously hope that you consider coming back. Part of the hunt is also as good as your guides are.. the information, expectations, and the eventual outcome (Quality Service). Look forward to you coming back out.

    • I hope that his didn’t come off as bad to you. I loved the hunt and the bear I shot. I had a great time and met a friend for life. Thanks for Having us and teaching me a lot. I hope to come back soon and if you need some to give you a good word…send them to me.
